The last decennia have seen an exceptional explosion of operatic activity in this country. Michael Davidson, an internationally known pianist and author, has frequently written on these developments. Aside from being a regular correspondent for the magazines Opera (London) and Opera Canada (Toronto), he has been published in the New Grove Encyclopedia of Opera, Arcadia and Opera Now. His books Mozart and the Pianist (third printing 2007) and The Classical Piano Sonata, from Haydn to Prokofiev (second printing 2007) have been much praised in the press. Schubert and Mayrhofer, written with Henk Hillenaar, will appear in November 2008.

This book about the opera in the Netherlands includes reviews of some 250 operas in 265 productions, including almost all stagings by De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, as well as many other productions by the Nationale Reisopera, Opera Zuid, etc. in other cities. There are also a few articles, including a short history of the opera in this country before 1973.

Michael Davidson was born in Canada but has long been a Dutch citizen. He has given recitals, master classes and lectures in sixteen countries.

“I immediately appreciated his professional and unbiased view of opera in
performance, his independent thinking… a compilation of his writings on
opera in the Netherlands will undoubtedly constitute an interesting publication
of historical value.”
– Peter de Caluwe, Intendant, Théâtre La Monnaie, Brussels

“Davidson’s writing is elegant, witty and extremely well informed… a collection of his views would make fascinating reading for anyone impassioned by the world of opera.”
– Alexander Oliver, Artistic Director, Nieuwe Opera Academie, Sweelinck & Koninklijk Conservatoria

“A conscientious observer, with deep background knowledge, and not swayed
by fashionable trends. He does not hesitate to express himself with outspoken frankness.”
– Eric van Griensven, Muziek & Theater Afd., Koninklijke Bibliotheek, De Haag
